HAIPHONG – STRATEGIC INVESTMENT LOCATION
Ho Chi Minh city – 23 April 2018, Haiphong Investment Seminar is co-organized by Eurocham and DEEP C Industrial zones with the support of KPMG and Saigon New Port. The audience is keen to getting a better understanding of potential business opportunities in Haiphong. A similar session was organized in Japanese on the same day.
The seminar follows recent major infrastructure developments in Haiphong city that are the game changers for FDI attraction and economic growth of both the north in general and Haiphong in particular.
The development of Haiphong International Gateway Port (also known as Lach Huyen Deep Sea Port) is the highlight of the key recent infrastructure project in the city. HICT, a JV between local company, Saigon Tan Cang Port together with its partners Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL Japan), Wan Hai Lines (WHL – Taiwan) and Itochu Corporation (ITO – Japan) pioneer the deepest seaport in the north of Vietnam. With a draft of -14m, vessels with a capacity of 14,000 TEU can make call to Haiphong. A significant improvement compared to the existing port of 2,000 TEU. With Lach Huyen Port in action from May this year, shipping times to Europe will be substantially reduced from 30 days to 23-25 days, to US West Coast from 35 days to 27-30 days, to US East Coast from 20 days to 13-15 days, thanks to new direct routes and the omission of transshipment. Accordingly, the incoming opening of Lach Huyen port will bring more logistics advantages for the projects in the active city.
Substantially the Lach Huyen port project is connected to the hinterland with other mega infrastructures, including Highway connections to Hanoi, coastal provinces, Quang Ninh and China, and Cat Bi International Airport. These updates have turned Haiphong into the main gateway of north Vietnam to regional and world markets, in particular, lowered the barriers to Vietnam’s major trading partners such as Europe, America, ASEAN, China, making Haiphong – a new Ho Chi Minh city in the north of Vietnam. DEEP C Industrial Zones lies in the heart of this epicenter of infrastructure, bringing to investors not only logistics advantages but also utilities provision of international standard, economic zone tax incentives and support for investors to start up, stated the International Business Development Manager of DEEP C, Mr. Hans Kerstens.
The seminar also brings practical guidelines from expert of KPMG on setting up an expansion project in the north by companies that are already in the south while maximizing benefits of tax incentives.
The development in the region also catches the attention of European investors. This is the reason EuroCham started its north eastern chapter last year, said Ms. Almut Roessner, Executive Director, EuroCham. Investments from market leaders such as Accor group, Hilton, Daiwa House, Fujita, AEON, etc. have been poured into the city to develop facilities for business and businessmen coming to Haiphong.
