Belgium: Shipit concession in the Port of Antwerp
Shipit organises multimodal transport. As an external logistic manager, this company seeks the most efficient transport solution for their customers by maximizing the use of alternative transport modi as inland shipping, rail and shortsea.
The activities of Shipit are split up in three business units:
- Bulk & Projects
For their large scale works, Shipit provides logistic services for the biggest infrastructure, remediation and dredging contractors.
- Container Haulage
Shipit is a multi-modal container terminal within the Port of Antwerp that offers a wide range of services including:
- Repositioning of high volumes of containers via the waterways on a daily basis.
- Stevedoring of containers and conventional cargo
- Container stuffing and stripping services (CFS)
- Trimodal Platform 1616
In the vicinity of the Deurganckdok in the port of Antwerp, Shipit operates a newbuilt trimodal harbour terminal of 8 hectares, of which 3 hectares are state-of-the-art warehouses.
Shipit is uniquely located within the locks on the Left Bank of the River Scheldt, in the immediate proximity of Antwerp’s two major container hubs at the Deurganckdock. It directly links into the road and rail infrastructure currently serving the Deurganckdock. As a result Shipit is able to present a competitive trimodal service offering waterways, rail and road.
Shipit’s infrastructure & equipment comprises of:
- Total surface of 90.000m²
- Warehouse 2 X 7.500m²/closed sheds up to 48.000m²
- Quaywall to a depth of -6m, allowing the handling of barges up to medium coasters
- Double 600m rail tracks
- Mobile cranes, reachstackers, forklifts…
Rent-A-Port has invested in the Ship-It project in tandem with a Belgian infrastructure fund.
Through this investment Rent-A-Port actively seeks to promote the transshipment of marine containers to inland waterway transport, hereby alleviating road congestion.
